Free AI Video Transcriber

Turn your videos and recordings into text and subtitles, free and without signing up. The speech recognition runs in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

Accurate is recommended: it downloads a 250–400 MB model once. Fast is about a third of the size and quicker, but can skip words over background music.

How it works

The tool uses Whisper, an open speech-recognition model from OpenAI, running on your own device. It listens to your file in short sections, writes down what is said with a timestamp for each phrase, and lets you download plain text or ready-made subtitles.

  1. Choose a video or audio file.
  2. Pick the spoken language (or let it detect it) and click Transcribe.
  3. Edit the text if needed, then download SRT subtitles for YouTube, a plain text file, or WebVTT.

For YouTube creators

  • Your own videos: download the video from YouTube Studio (Content, then the three-dot menu, then Download) and drop it here.
  • Add subtitles: in YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose Upload file, and select the SRT you downloaded here.
  • Repurpose content: turn a transcript into a blog post, show notes or social captions.
  • This tool does not fetch videos from YouTube links: it works on files you have.

Tips for better results

  • Clear speech with little background music gives the best accuracy.
  • Set the language instead of auto-detect when you know it, especially for Hindi, Urdu and Arabic.
  • A computer with Chrome or Edge uses the graphics chip and is much faster; on a phone, keep files short.
  • Machine transcription makes mistakes with names and specialist words, so read it through before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is processed entirely on your device. The only downloads are the tool itself and the speech model, which your browser keeps for next time.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no monthly minutes limit and no watermark. Each file can be up to two hours long. The page is supported by ads.

How long does it take?

It depends on your device and the model. With a graphics chip (Chrome or Edge on a computer) it is much faster than on the processor alone; the status line shows which one is being used.
