How to write a check, step by step

  1. Date. Write today’s date in the top-right corner, for example 11/05/2026 or November 5, 2026.
  2. Pay to the order of. Write the full name of the person or company you are paying. Check the exact spelling for a business, such as your landlord’s company name.
  3. Amount in numbers. Write the amount in the box next to the $ sign, close to the sign so nobody can add a digit in front: 1,250.75.
  4. Amount in words. Write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction over 100: One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100. Then draw a line from the end of your words to the word “Dollars”.
  5. Memo. Optional, but useful: what the payment is for, or the account or invoice number the payee asked for.
  6. Signature. Sign on the bottom-right line. A check is not valid without it.

Then write the check number, date, payee and amount in your check register or banking app, so your balance stays correct until the check clears.

Rules that trip people up

  • Cents go as a fraction. Write 75 cents as 75/100. For a whole-dollar amount, write and 00/100 (some people write and no/100; both are widely understood).
  • Use “and” only once, before the cents. Write One hundred fifty and 00/100, not “one hundred and fifty”.
  • Hyphenate 21 to 99: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine.
  • Amounts under a dollar: write Zero and 50/100 on the line, and 0.50 in the box.
  • Fill the empty space. Draw a line after the words so nothing can be added.
  • Words and numbers must match. If they differ, the words generally take priority under the Uniform Commercial Code § 3-114, and the bank may also hold or return the check. Double-check both before you sign.

Safety tips

  • Write in dark blue or black ink, never pencil.
  • Never sign a blank check, or leave the payee or amount empty.
  • If you make a mistake, write VOID in large letters across the check and start a new one rather than crossing out.
  • Keep the amount box and the words close to their left edges so nothing can be squeezed in.
  • For mobile deposits, many banks ask you to sign the back and write “For mobile deposit only”; check your bank’s app for its exact wording.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the written amount and the number don’t match?

Under the Uniform Commercial Code § 3-114, words prevail over numbers when they conflict. In practice, a bank may also pause or return a check with mismatched amounts, so it is safest to void it and write a new one.

Do I need to write “dollars”?

No. Most checks already print “Dollars” at the end of the line. Write the amount in words and the cents fraction, then draw a line up to the printed word.

How do I write a check for $1,500?

Write 1,500.00 in the box and One thousand five hundred and 00/100 on the line. “Fifteen hundred and 00/100” is also understood, but spelling out the thousands is clearer.

Can I write a check to “Cash”?

You can, but anyone holding that check could cash it. Writing a specific name is safer.
